The Horror Movie
It was a hot summer morning. After two hours of playing cricket, everyone was tired and we sat on two benches. Exhausted and sweaty, we made an odd group of friends with a smooth, creamy and cool chocobar in everyone's hand contradicting our state.
Me and my 7 friends hungrily gobbled up the ice-cream, thinking of it as a reward for our undying efforts of playing in the blazing mid-may heat. it's already 12pm by the time we decide to go home, most of it just to catch a glimpse of a fan rotating at a terrifying speed( in which you are sure that the fan is going to fall on you with a large chunk of the ceiling) while we stand underneath it and also to eat the sweet, juicy mango syrup watching our favourite summer special movie/serial. I pressed the button reading 'G'(ground floor), summoning the lift down from the 6th floor. With a lazy creak the elevator started it's downward journey.
" Hey guys, have you heard about the movie 'Conjuring'?", R (a friend) asked. " Yes, I know about it.", said T who was a geeky kind of fellow, the one who had to know about every news making event.
Although most of the news we got from him earlier was more about his achievements, so we gave each other symphatating looks, waiting for him to get over his usual drama. "It's the best horror movie of the decade and 100s of people have died after watching it. It's also directed by one of hollywood's best director.", he said beaming proudly as if he had taught equation of relativity to class full of fifth grade droppers.
But horror movie was something which caught our attention. Normally, 13 year olds aren't permitted to watch a horror movie in theatres and coming from a conservative background, watching horror movies with parents was out of question.
"Yeah, all that was pretty informative, but what about it?" I asked feeling annoyed by heat. "So, my brother got it's pirated version and now, he isn't home.so, I am gonna watch it, but I don't want to watch it alone. so, if you people could come over?"R said. not many of us had seen a real horror movie, so the prospect of watching one immediately left behind our mango dreams.
"Count me in." I say and almost instantly know that tonight I won't be sleeping. maybe others too understood it because three of them immediately backed out.The rest of us not wanting to watch a horror movie without many people started convincing them.
We started by saying, " When would you ever get such opportunity?, We can't watch them at home too. You know that. Why let this opportunity go?". Anyone else who heard us, must have thought that we were gonna go to the moon or send a satellite in the space. We huddled together as if we were a football team discussing a flawless strategy to score 10 goals against the german team.
"We will tell our parents that we are watching an Avengers movie.", P said. " No, I never watch Avengers movies. I hate them, why can't we say something else.", A countered. This statement was met with disapproving grunts. We spent good 15 minutes arguing with her for hating Avengers and voted on why do we have to tolerate an anti-Avengers person in our group.
Eventually, we came back to our topic. After thoroughly debating we agreed on telling at home that we were going to watch Jurassic Park. Wishing each other good luck, we headed towards home, quite confidently, but doubtful for our future.
We managed to convince our parents, thanking god for this miracle the way we do when we accidently get good marks in our worst subject. We all reached R's place 10 minutes before the scheduled time. a historic event for us which we decided to celebrate by eating cool blood-red coloured watermelon(no pun intended).
We were watching it on her computer, so we all sat on the bed at one corner, farthest from the screen, fearing if something comes out of it.
We yelled, held pillows in front our eyes by snatching someone else's who was using it as a shield to protect himself. Not very impressive when you know that no amount of cotton balls could save your life from a ghost who could teleport herself. And the fraidy cat of our group, V was chanting the most holy mantra in Hindu religion 'Gayatri mantra' throughout the movie.
S decided that she will not stay there for even a minute, now that she was so creeped out. We paused the movie and wished her luck. Two minutes later the doorbell rang.
To decide who would open the door, we made 7 chits out of which one had the word 'door' written on it. N got the chit with the ominous 4 lettered word. He opened the door with a stick in his hand and S came running in.
Wack! She bumped her head with the stick and we burst out laughing. She admitted that she was petrified by the thought of going home alone and so had decided to come back. We watched the entire movie(maybe not all the scary scenes) and went home in a group so that no one would be left alone.
Next day, we asked each other about yesterday night. Everyone said that they had the finest sleep ever with heavily visible dark circles.
Even today, we like to assemble and watch horror movies. Maybe, we still get scared but the excitement, the fear, the thrill and the joy we feel after the end of every movie is something I can never forget and will cherish these memories for a long time.
